This Will Do The Trick

It is time for another Halloweensie contest!

“This will do the trick!” the witch cackled as she plucked cobwebs from a dark corner. She leaned over her cauldron and stirred the foul-smelling potion.

The clock began to chime; it was All Hallows Eve. She had children to scare!

She scooped up her potions and headed for the door.

The sound of sniffles stopped her. In the corner, a spider wiped his eight eyes and stared at where his home used to be.

She lifted her hat, “Hop on.” After all, what is scarier than a spider in your hair!

  1. It is nice to know the witch had a soft spot for a spider! I just hope they don’t live on our route! Good job and good luck!

  2. This is such a well-written story with thoughtful word choice (“plucked” and “scooped” among many others) and delightful description (my fave is “the spider wiped his eight eyes”). The ending defies our expectations in a heartwarming, good way, while staying true to the witch’s character. Although I suspect that the spider’s tears may have pierced her green skin a little more than she lets on. @AnneLipton

  3. Poor little spider. It’s nice that the witch felt a little compassion for the homeless creature. OTOH, My son is absolutely terrified of spiders, so if he had one in his hair, I’m not sure what would happen. Other than a lot of screaming and flailing.
